How it works

Divide the width and height by their greatest common divisor to simplify the ratio. For example, 1920 × 1080 becomes 16:9.

To resize without distortion, multiply the new width by the original height-to-width relationship.

A-series paper uses the square-root-of-two relationship, so its decimal ratio is approximately 1.414:1.

Worked examples

Check the numbers

1920 × 1080 pixels

The simplified ratio is 16:9. A matching 1200-pixel width requires a height of 675 pixels.

8 × 10 inch print

The simplified ratio is 4:5. A 16-inch-wide version at the same ratio must be 20 inches high.

3:2 photo on A4 paper

The proportions do not match. Filling A4 requires cropping, while fitting the whole photo leaves a margin.

Common mistakes to avoid

Typing width and height independently

Forcing both dimensions changes the proportions and can stretch faces, circles and typography.

Cropping after the resolution check

A later crop removes pixels and changes effective PPI. Set the composition first, then check print quality.

Assuming A4 and Letter are interchangeable

They have different proportions. Moving between them can alter margins, page flow or the visible crop.

What is an aspect ratio?

It is the proportional relationship between width and height. The same ratio can describe pixels, inches, centimetres or any consistent unit.

Why does my image crop when printed?

If the image and paper have different aspect ratios, fitting edge to edge requires cropping one dimension. Otherwise the print needs borders.

Does aspect ratio determine resolution?

No. Aspect ratio describes shape, not detail. Two images can share a ratio while having very different pixel dimensions and print quality.
