Common print setup mistakes

Making the trim size larger

Bleed expands the working document, not the finished product. The trim size remains the final cut dimensions.

Using bleed as a safe margin

Bleed sits outside trim; the safe area sits inside it. They solve different production risks and should be calculated separately.

Trusting a DPI label alone

Effective resolution comes from pixels divided by final inches. Changing metadata without adding real detail does not improve it.

Does adding bleed change the trim size?

No. The trim size is the final finished size. Bleed adds extra artwork beyond every trim edge, making the working document larger.

Is 300 DPI always required?

No. It is a common target for close-viewed quality printing, but large posters viewed from farther away can often use a lower effective resolution. Follow your printer's specification.

Are my images uploaded?

No. You enter only the pixel dimensions. All calculations happen in your browser and no design file is uploaded.

How much bleed should I add?

Use the exact value supplied by the printer or publisher. Values such as 3 mm or 0.125 inch are common, but they are not universal.

Does the pixel result include bleed?

The main required pixel size describes the final trim. The document-with-bleed result shows the larger working dimensions; convert that full size when creating a raster document.
