The calculation

How it works

For each standard size, the calculator first matches the image’s portrait or landscape orientation. It then applies a centred crop to the print’s aspect ratio and calculates effective PPI = remaining pixels ÷ print inches.

A result of 300 PPI is a strong target for a close-viewed photo. Results from 240 to 299 PPI are usually very good, while larger display prints may work at lower density when viewed from farther away.

Print dimensions do not all share the same shape. A camera image may fit one family perfectly and require cropping for another.

The crop percentage is an area estimate for a centred crop. Repositioning the crop changes composition, not the amount removed.

6000 × 4000 camera image

The native 3:2 ratio fits 4 × 6, 12 × 18 and 20 × 30 without cropping. An 8 × 10 print removes part of the long edges.

4000 × 5000 art file

The 4:5 image ratio fits 8 × 10 and 16 × 20 directly, making those strong choices for downloadable artwork.

2400 × 3000 portrait

At 8 × 10 inches the file provides 300 PPI. Enlarging to 16 × 20 reduces the effective density to 150 PPI.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing by megapixels alone

Megapixels describe total image area, but print quality depends on the pixels available along each final print dimension.

Ignoring the crop

A high-resolution file can still lose important content when the photo and paper use different aspect ratios.

Upscaling before checking the original

Calculate from the original edited pixels first. Resampling creates more pixels but does not restore missing detail.

What is the best PPI for photo printing?

300 PPI is a common high-quality target for close viewing. Many labs produce very good results from 240 PPI, while larger wall prints can use less depending on viewing distance and subject detail.

Why does an 8 × 10 crop my camera photo?

Most cameras produce a 3:2 or 4:3 image, while 8 × 10 uses a 5:4 ratio. The shapes differ, so part of the image must be cropped or blank borders must be added.

Does the calculator upload my photo?

No. It only needs the pixel width and height, so no image leaves your device.
