The calculation

How it works

The artwork must extend past every edge of the visible face: full size = finished size + 2 × (stretcher depth + extra bleed). The result is then converted to pixels using the selected PPI.

A 24 × 36 inch canvas with a 1.5 inch gallery wrap and 0.25 inch extra bleed needs artwork measuring 27.5 × 39.5 inches before converting to pixels.

Worked examples

Check the numbers

24 × 36 inch canvas, 1.5 inch wrap

With 0.25 inch extra bleed, the artwork becomes 27.5 × 39.5 inches. At 150 PPI it needs 4125 × 5925 pixels.

40 × 60 cm canvas, 3 cm wrap

Adding 0.5 cm extra bleed per edge produces a full file of 47 × 67 cm before conversion to pixels.

12 × 12 inch square canvas

A 1.25 inch wrap plus 0.25 inch extra bleed adds 3 inches to both dimensions, producing a 15 × 15 inch artwork file.

Before you export

Common mistakes to avoid

Using the face size as the document size

The canvas needs additional image area on all four edges. A face-only file leaves the wrap blank or forces enlargement.

Putting text in the wrap zone

Keep lettering, signatures and faces inside the front-face safe area unless the side placement is intentional.

Assuming every provider wraps identically

Rear stapling, mirrored edges and frame depths vary. Confirm the exact template before final production.

How much image should wrap around a canvas?

At minimum, allow for the stretcher-bar depth on every side. Many providers also request a small additional bleed that reaches around the rear edge.

What PPI should a canvas print use?

It depends on canvas size, texture, viewing distance and provider workflow. Values from 150 to 240 PPI are common planning targets, but use the printer’s specification.

Does the wrap area need important image content?

Usually no. Important content should remain on the front face. The wrap can use extended image, mirrored edges or a solid colour depending on the desired finish.
