The tool compares the source width-to-height ratio with the target. It removes only the excess width or height needed to match the new shape.
Crop position changes which pixels are retained; it does not stretch the image. The exported crop keeps the remaining source resolution.
Two prints can share a ratio even when their physical sizes differ.

The target is 4:5, so some width is removed. Move the horizontal focus to protect the subject.
The A-series target is taller, so the crop removes width from the square source.
The crop retains approximately 3200 × 4000 pixels, enough for about 10.7 × 13.3 inches at 300 PPI.
Important type or logos near an edge can be cut. Resolve the crop before final layout work.
A 4:5 ratio describes shape, not physical dimensions. Choose the final inches or millimetres separately.
