The calculation

How it works

Multiply width by height and divide by one million: megapixels = width × height ÷ 1,000,000. A 6000 × 4000 pixel image contains 24 megapixels.

6000 × 4000 pixels

The image contains exactly 24 megapixels, uses a 3:2 ratio and needs about 68.7 MB as uncompressed 8-bit RGB data.

3840 × 2160 pixels

A 4K frame contains about 8.3 megapixels, uses a 16:9 ratio and needs about 23.7 MB uncompressed.

2400 × 3000 pixels

The file contains 7.2 megapixels, simplifies to a 4:5 ratio and needs about 20.6 MB uncompressed.

Equating megapixels with sharpness

Pixel count cannot reveal focus, motion blur, noise, compression or lens quality.

Ignoring aspect-ratio crop

A paper shape that differs from the image can remove pixels and reduce the available print dimensions.

Comparing rounded labels

Two files sold as the same megapixel class can have different exact widths, heights and proportions.

How are megapixels calculated?

Multiply pixel width by pixel height and divide by one million. The result is the total number of image pixels in millions.

Is megapixel count the same as file size?

No. Megapixels count image pixels. File size also depends on colour depth, compression, format, metadata and editing layers.

Does more megapixels always mean a better print?

No. More pixels can support a larger print, but source sharpness, processing, crop and the printing method also affect the result.
