The calculation

How it works

Add bleed twice to each trim dimension: document width = trim width + (2 × bleed). Use the same calculation for height because bleed extends beyond both opposite edges.

Safe margin works in the opposite direction. Subtract it twice from the trim dimensions to find the internal area for critical content.

Worked examples

Check the numbers

A4 with 3 mm bleed

A 210 × 297 mm trim becomes a 216 × 303 mm document because 3 mm is added to both sides of each dimension.

8 × 10 in with 0.125 in bleed

The working document is 8.25 × 10.25 inches, while the final cut remains exactly 8 × 10 inches.

Safe margin of 5 mm on A4

The central safe content area is 200 × 287 mm after subtracting 5 mm from all four edges.

Before you export

Common mistakes to avoid

Adding bleed only once

A per-side value must be added to both opposite edges, so each full dimension increases by twice the bleed.

Putting white space in the bleed

Bleed must continue the edge artwork; an empty border cannot prevent white slivers after cutting.

Treating safe margin as bleed

Bleed is outside trim and safe margin is inside it. They protect against different production risks.

How much bleed should I use?

Use the printer’s specification. Values such as 3 mm and 0.125 inch are common, but they are not universal.

Does bleed change the finished size?

No. Bleed makes the working document larger. The trim line still defines the final finished dimensions.

Should photos extend into bleed?

Yes, when they touch a finished edge. Extend the image through the full bleed area rather than adding a separate border.
