The calculation

How it works

Target pixels are calculated as print inches × PPI. A 10 × 8 inch print at 300 PPI needs 3000 × 2400 pixels.

Resampling changes pixel dimensions. Reducing is usually safe; enlarging invents pixels and can make fine detail look softer.

Worked examples

Check the numbers

8 × 10 inches at 300 PPI

The result is 2400 × 3000 pixels. A source at or above those dimensions can be reduced without upscaling.

A4 at 240 PPI

210 × 297 mm converts to approximately 1984 × 2806 pixels.

20 × 30 inches at 150 PPI

The result is 3000 × 4500 pixels, a practical poster target when it will be viewed from farther away.

Before you export

Common mistakes to avoid

Stretching the proportions

An output ratio that differs from the source will distort it. Crop to the target ratio first when proportions matter.

Assuming upscaling adds detail

New pixels smooth transitions but do not restore detail that was never captured.

Ignoring the printer profile

Pixel dimensions are only part of production. Confirm colour space, file format and bleed separately.

Is my image uploaded?

Should I use JPEG or PNG?

JPEG is efficient for photographs. PNG is useful for graphics, transparency and lossless output, but files are often larger.

Does resizing change the aspect ratio?

The tool uses the width and height you enter. If their ratio differs from the source, the image will be stretched, so use the crop preview first.
