The calculation

How it works

Divide each pixel dimension by the corresponding print dimension in inches: PPI = pixels ÷ inches. The lower result is the limiting effective resolution.

Changing only the DPI metadata does not create new image detail. Actual print resolution depends on the pixel count and physical output size.

Fine text, line art and highly detailed images can need different treatment from continuous-tone photographs.

Worked examples

Check the numbers

3600 × 2400 px at 12 × 8 inches

Both dimensions provide 300 PPI, a common target for close-viewed photo printing.

2400 × 1600 px at 24 × 16 inches

The result is 100 PPI. This may work for a poster viewed at a distance but is low for a close-viewed photo print.

3000 × 3000 px at 10 × 10 inches

The square print receives 300 PPI in both directions with no aspect-ratio crop.

Before you export

Common mistakes to avoid

Changing only the metadata

Relabelling a file from 72 to 300 DPI does not add pixels. Effective PPI still depends on pixels divided by inches.

Checking only one dimension

Calculate both width and height. The lower effective value limits the result, especially after cropping.

Using a compressed copy

A file saved by messaging or social platforms may be smaller than the original. Locate the highest-resolution source first.

Is DPI stored inside an image?

Some formats store a DPI or PPI metadata value, but changing that tag alone does not add pixels or improve detail. Effective print resolution depends on pixels divided by print size.

What is a good image resolution for printing?

300 PPI is a common target for close viewing, while 240 PPI is often very good. Larger displays viewed from farther away can require less. Follow the printer’s specification.
